VISION
The best engineers do not focus on what is considered feasible.
Instead, they ask what would be desirable, what could enrich
life as it is, and then commit all their power, all their
creativity and their knowledge to make it happen. Passionate
about their art, they manage to create today what will become
the legends of tommorow.
For over three decades Porsche Design has developed and manufactured
chronographs that keep setting new standards. Instead of just
varying the old and familiar, they continue to develop the
art of watchmaking, with n w functions, remarkable materials,
a pure and exciting design concept and absolute perfection
down to the last detail.
Therefore it is exceptional to own and wear a watch by Porsche
Design – just as exceptional as it is for us to make
one. PRINCIPLES - Pure
function
If someone wants to create something genuinely
new, he or she must be a master in their discipline, and be
able to look beyond their limits.
The engineers of Porsche Design watches draw their inspiration
from many different sources besides sports-car making. They
take over and apply ideas from the aviation and aerospace
industries – e.g. to search for specific functions and
the materials that make them possible. An example for this
is the high-tech material titanium, previously only used in
the aerospace industry, however Porsche Design was the first
to introduce this valuable material to the watch industry.
Our thinking and our actions focus on the reduction of things
to their very function. Every watch we design must initially
answer two key questions: does it offer something that has
not yet been a feature in any other watch? And does this novelty
indeed mean progress for the user? Only of both of these questions
can be answered with a clear and unequivocal yes, can the
idea evolve into a product worthy to bear the Porsche Design
logo. Because for us innovation always has one key purpose:
to offer the owner of a watch added value, both material and
immaterial.
Everything else is derived from functionality: the choice
of materials and the workmanship, where craftsmanship and
state-of-the-art technology merge. This is because we believe
the key function of design is to serve. Good design represents
the formal translation of a functional principle – an
idea that has taken shape. Clear lines without unnecessary
ornamentations are the corollary of this approach. As a result,
Porsche Design watches, provide a welcome benefit: the design
of our watches is marked by a timeless beauty – as the
changes of fashion occur on an entirely different level.
In or way of thinking, we adhere to the principles of our
founder, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, whose name is synonymous
with numerous design classics in a wide range of areas.
CRAFTSMANSHIP – Endless
innovation
People who make chronographs at the highest
level of craftsmanship must rely on a unique set of skills:
a steady hand, patience, scrupulousness and care, dedication
and passion, love for detail and commitment to absolute perfection.
This is mainly because a chronograph is, particularly when
equipped with a mechanical drive, an extremely complex product.
Hundreds of part, many of the microscopically small, have
to be integrated within but a few cubic centimetres. Every
one of them must be built and mounted to perfection. Only
then can it serve its purpose as an element to the smooth
interplay with the other parts – and contribute to the
chronographs’ perfection.
People who meet such expectations tend to live in places where
the love of watchmaking and the knowledge that comes with
it have been passed on from generation to generation.
The Swiss town of Grenchen is precisely such a place. Here,
in the foothills of the Jura mountains, lies the factory where
Porsche Design watches have been manufactured in recent years.
Eternal is the ideal partner to implement the creative concepts
developed by Porsche Design, as its factory exemplifies an
ideal combination of traditional craftsmanship and visionary
thinking. Since its foundation in 1856, Eterna has shaped
the history of watchmaking with many groundbreaking inventions.
The new Porsche Design INDICATOR certainly is another product
worthy of this tradition.
Watchmakers at Eterna work closely with the engineers of Porsche
Design in Zell am See (Austria), with their joint knowledge
and experience going into new developments. This leads to
the manufacture of watches that are firmly based on traditional
craftsmanship while pointing the way to the future. |
